BSM Evolution Timeline

2016

Autopilot 2.0 Hardware

Tesla begins shipping vehicles with AP2 hardware including repeater cameras on the front fenders — the foundation for all future blind spot monitoring. Model S and X get 8 cameras total.

2017

Model 3 Launches

Model 3 ships with AP2.5 hardware and repeater cameras. The 3D car visualization on the touchscreen shows nearby vehicles, including those in blind spots, highlighted in red.

2020

Model Y Launches

Model Y ships with HW3. Same camera-based 3D visualization as Model 3. No dedicated blind spot feature yet.

Dec 2021

🎄 Holiday Update — Blind Spot Camera

Major OTA update adds Automatic Blind Spot Camera to all Teslas with repeater cameras (HW2.5+). When you activate your turn signal, a live camera feed from the corresponding side appears on the touchscreen. Game-changer for lane changes.

Oct 2022

Ultrasonic Sensors Removed

Tesla removes USS from Model 3 and Model Y, shifting fully to Tesla Vision (camera-only). Model S/X follow in 2023. BSM continues via cameras only.

Oct 2023

💡 Model 3 Highland — Hardware BSM LED

The refreshed Model 3 "Highland" is the first Tesla with a physical blind spot indicator — a red LED in the A-pillar that illuminates when a vehicle is detected in the blind spot. No need to look at the screen.

Dec 2023

🎄 Holiday Update — Red Shading

OTA update adds red border/shading to the blind spot camera feed when a vehicle is detected. Applies to all models with HW2.5+, including older Model 3/Y/S/X. Massive improvement for screen-based BSM.

Nov 2024

Cybertruck Deliveries Ramp

Cybertruck ships with HW4, hardware blind spot indicators, and enhanced door-open blind spot warning (warns of approaching vehicles/cyclists when opening doors).

Mar 2025

💡 Model Y Juniper — Hardware BSM LED

Refreshed Model Y "Juniper" adds hardware blind spot indicator LED (in speaker grille). Full OEM touchscreen integration. Second mainstream Tesla with physical BSM hardware.

Apr 2025

Model S/X Instrument Cluster BSM

Spring update moves the blind spot camera to the driver's instrument cluster on 2021+ Model S/X refreshes, so drivers can see the feed without looking at the center screen.

Understanding the 3 Types of Tesla BSM

1

Hardware LED Indicator

Best
  • Physical LED light in A-pillar or speaker grille
  • Illuminates red/amber when vehicle detected in blind spot
  • Works like traditional cars — glance at pillar, not the screen
  • Always visible in peripheral vision
  • Only on: Model 3 Highland (2024+), Model Y Juniper (2025+), Cybertruck
2

Camera Feed + Red Shading

Good
  • Live repeater camera feed appears on touchscreen when turn signal activated
  • Red border/shading overlaid when vehicle detected (2023 Holiday Update)
  • Requires looking at the center touchscreen
  • Configurable: can enable "Blind Spot Chime" for audio alert
  • Available on: All Teslas with AP2+ hardware (2016+) running recent software
3

3D Visualization Only

Basic
  • The 3D car view on the touchscreen highlights nearby vehicles in red
  • Shows approximate position of detected vehicles
  • No dedicated camera feed, no LED indicator
  • Easy to miss — small and embedded in the driving visualization
  • Available on: All Teslas with Autopilot cameras (fallback on older software)

Frequently Asked Questions

Not from Tesla — the hardware LED is built into the A-pillar (Highland) or speaker grille (Juniper) at the factory and isn't available as a retrofit from Tesla. However, several aftermarket companies (TAPTES, TESERY, TesLaunch) sell radar-based BSD kits with RGB ambient lights that integrate with the touchscreen on Model 3/Y. These typically cost $150–$400 and require installation.

No. Tesla's blind spot monitoring has always been camera-based (using the repeater cameras on the front fenders). The ultrasonic sensors were used for parking assist, not blind spot detection. Their removal in late 2022–2023 doesn't impact BSM functionality.

Red shading on the blind spot camera was added in the 2023 Holiday Update (2023.44.25). Make sure your car is running software version 2023.44.25 or later. On HW2.5 cars, the red shading works but may appear less frequently than on HW3/HW4 vehicles. All hardware generations support it, including older Model S/X with MCU2.

No. As of 2026, neither the Model S nor Model X has a hardware blind spot LED indicator. They rely on the touchscreen camera feed and, since the spring 2025 update, the instrument cluster can also show the blind spot camera view on the 2021+ refresh models.

Go to Controls → Autopilot → Automatic Blind Spot Camera and toggle it on. When enabled, the repeater camera feed will automatically appear on the touchscreen whenever you activate your turn signal. You can also enable "Blind Spot Collision Warning Chime" in the same menu for an audible alert.

No. AP1 vehicles (generally Model S/X built before Oct 2016) use the Mobileye EyeQ3 chip with a single forward-facing camera. They do not have repeater cameras on the fenders, which means there's no camera feed for blind spot monitoring. The 3D visualization may show some nearby vehicles, but there's no dedicated BSM feature.
